Charge of the Light Brigade

The Charge Of The Light Brigade
Alfred Lord Tennyson
By Quaid Fletcher
LI: to understand the story behind this narrative poem

Half a league, half a league,
     Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
     Rode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!' he said:
Into the valley of Death
     Rode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd ?
Not tho' the soldier knew
     Some one had blunder'd:
Their's not to make reply,
Their's not to reason why,
Their's but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
     Volley'd and thundered;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
     Rode the six hundred.
Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
     All the world wondered:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre-stroke
     Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
     Not the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
     Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
     Left of six hundred.
When can their glory fade ?
O the wild charge they made!
     All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
     Noble six hundred!

At the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 during the Crimean War, the ‘Light Brigade’, (a group of British soldiers), charged down a narrow valley to fight the Russian soldiers who had captured British guns. The Russians were at the end of the valley as well as on each side of it. The attack was not a wise choice and happened because of a misunderstanding of an order sent by the commander-in-chief. After following orders less than a third of these men survived.

Answer these questions in full sentences:

“If you were in the military and you were given an order, would you obey it – even if it meant putting your life on the line?  Why or why not?”
Yes I would because otherwise they might decide to punish you.

What is a brigade?
A subdivision of an army, typically consisting of a small number of infantry battalions and/or other units and often forming part of a division: "he commanded a brigade of 3,000 men".
“Theirs not to make reply/Theirs not to reason why/Theirs but to do and die” - What did this mean for the soldiers?
It might be a leader saying it and  if they don't follow they can also be punished.

Quaid's Magic Tale-By Quaid-True Story?

One time far away there was a boy named Quaid who lived in New Zealand. The year was 2011. He Lived with his mum,dad and his 3 sisters. One day Quaid decided that their mum should go on a holiday. But there was a switch. His mum had to him turn invisible because he was the one who came up with the idea in the first place. She really had to because after all it was Quaid's idea for her to go to Australia where her dad lived .

Mum made him vanish and after about 10 minutes Quaid wanted to be visible again. The only way this could happen was for him to eat lots and lots of lollies. First he ate a milk bottle lolly. He tried this because he once read a story where the characters kept going places looking for food to make them appear again. Quaid rushed to the shop to buy a packet of mixed lollies. He scoffed them right away. Before Quaid knew it he was back to the smart boy he was and always will be.

The Crumble Kid-By Quaid

After School one day, I decided to make an apple crumble for my teacher Miss Day and so that is what I did.I made an apple crumble so that I have something exciting to write about and something that I know people would like to read about on the class blog Animation Nation. After I made the crumble I had to go to the shops to get the whipped cream so that I can cover the crumble but guess what when I got to the shops the dairy was closed and so I had to walk home in the freezing cold.
